Mac lower price on one of their MacBook Air models

The very acclaimed computer MacBook Air is becoming cheaper since Mac has decided to lower the price with 500 bucks. There are two different versions of MacBook Air, one that has got a weaker CPU (Intel Core 2 Duo 1,6 GHz), regular hard drive of 80 GB and one model with a stronger processor (Intel Core 2 Duo 1,8 GHz), solid-state drive of 64 GB. The last computer mentioned is affected by the lowered price. Apple has cut the price by 16% which imply 500 dollars. I'm not personally interested in buying a MacBook Air because I find the price is entirely too high. Apple Store set the price to $1,799 for the cheapest one and $2,598 for the more powerful MacBook Air computer. If you are going to buy a MacBook Air, then I suggest that you wait a couple of days to get the computer $500 cheaper.

Microsoft is loosing its market shares to Mac

Microsoft's is loosing some of its market shares. Microsoft "only" has about 90% of the market. Above all, it's Mac that slowly cut down on Microsoft's monopoly. The company Net Applications indicates that 90.89% of all computers use Windows OS. Mac OS X is upcoming star with 7.94% of Internet connected PCs. Linux only have 0.80% of the market. Personally I use Ubuntu Linux, and it will do fine, even if it is some difficulties before you get the operating system to act as you want. Ubuntu requires some juggle to get movies, music, etc working. Otherwise it's a rather good alternative for former Windows users. Read more at Net Applications homepage.

Uninstall and remove programs completely with Revo Unistaller Freeware

Windows Add/Remove Programs does not always remove the installed software completely. On the contrary, programs are often left on the hard drive in one way or another. However, there are better tools to use if you want to be sure to remove a program completely. Revo Uninstaller Freeware is such a uninstallation tool. The program uninstall and remove programs, even if it can not be done properly by using Windows normal uninstallation method. Revo uses a mathematical algorithm to make a quick and effective uninstall a program. By using Revo you are able to not only uninstall the program but also delete the folders, files and registry keys that have been left during the uninstallation process.

The program also has a feature called "Hunter mode" and it makes it possible to uninstall the program by selecting a shortcut on the Windows desktop or by cclicking the program icon in the system tray. This is a good feature as it provides an opportunity to uninstall programs that you might not know what they could be find or and if you are helping someone with their computer. Revo provides a smooth and easy way to uninstall programs! You can download Revo Uninstaller Freeware free from the website which can be found here.

iPhone/iPod Touch - a program that creates a smart playlist for iPod and iPhone

iPhone/iPod Touch is a programme that improves the shuffle function of iPhone or iPod. The program adapts the shuffle mechanism after your listening habits. You need to upload the playlist to the site Instinctiv which then analyzes the playlist. The site then sends back a shuffled list depending on artists, music genre, etc. Best of all, the programme continues to analyze your listening habits. The program register the songs that are played and decide how the playlist will be arranged. This is possible because the programme takes into account which songs you tend to skip, and when you choose to do so. Exactly how the analysis is done is a secret, the reason is - otherwise, you may steal the whole concept. ;). Does it sound interesting, then go to the site and read more about the service. Instinctiv also have published a funny commercial video. The website can be found here.

Important security update for Firefox 2

Although Mozilla recently released Firefox 3, there are still a lot of people using Firefox 2. Probably because of failure during the installation of FF3 or simply as a result of unknowledge about the release of Firefox 3. Firefox had no less than 125 million users worldwide by the end of 2007. Today the figure is even higher. Therefore there may be some people still using Firefox 2.

It is very important to have an updated browser if you wish to use the Internet safely and avoid getting infected by malware, etc. It is also to meet this need amoung their users that Mozilla has just brought out a new package of security updates to Firefox 2. The new edition of Firefox 2 is called Firefox 2.0.0.15, and contains, better security in terms of certificates, which reduces the risk of being subjected to phishing. Before the update, one could fool Firefox 2 to accept an unreliable certificate if the name of the certificate recalled a trusted certificate name. A user who were not on guard could thus happen to give the false certificate full rights. Below, you'll find a list of problems that Mozilla has resolved in Firefox 2, version 2.0.0.15. In addition, Mozilla also has improved memory management, which is welcome in the case of Firefox 2. If you are using Firefox 2, click on the alternetive "Help" and select "Search for updates", or install the latest version of Firefox 2 via Mozilla's website, se link below. Or why not switch to Firefox 3? If you want to read more about the new features in Firefox 2.0.0.15, you will find Mozilla's Release Notes on the browser here. For those of you who still insist on using Firefox 2 instead of Firefox 3, there is a direct link to Firefox 2.0.0.x. You can find the latest version of Firefox 2 here.

SOS Children: Wikipedia Selection for schools

SOS Children has released a special edition of Wikipedia. The Selection is about the size of a 15 volume encyclopaedia with 24,000 pictures, 14 million words and articles on 4,625 topics. The articles are specifically selected to follow the UK National Curriculum. The articles are also guaranteed child-friendly, so that the encyclopaedia does not contain any information or material that might be inappropriate for children and young people. The encyclopaedia is called Wikipedia for schools and is available online. If you want the encyclopaedia on a laptop without a permanent Internet connection then you are able to download the encyclopaedia from the British website of SOS Children. There are two different files available at the site, one file of 792 MB, and a larger file of 2.5 GB. What distinguishes the large file from the the larger one is that the large file contains full-scale images while the images of the images of the smaller file is compressed to thumbnails. The advantage of Wikipedia for schools version of Wikipedia is that it has been reviewed by experts and therefore errors are corrected. In addition, the Wikipedia for schools are not open for the public to edit, which prevents people from clutter the articles with advertising or their own political opinions. I read some of the articles and I think it was written in a fairly moderate level. In case you want to get a little general knowledge in different areas there would be a good reason to read Wikipedia for schools. For example, I read about Zimbabwe, which gave me some understanding of what is happening there these days, about Mugabe's background, vote-rigging etc. I think that Wikipedia for schools is well worth a visit. You can find Wikipedia for schools on the Internet here. Would you rather download the encyclopedia, you will find links to the files here.

Overclock your Mac with ZDNet Clock

There are a multitude of overclocking tools for Windows. I even got one when a purchased a new motherboard to my computer. The program was included in the installation disc. For Macintosh, it has been a little more difficult to get overclocking tools. Until now. German ZDNet has developed a program called ZDNet Clock to overclock Macintosh computers. According to ZDNet, it is possible to overclock a Mac Pro on clock speed 2.8 GHz to around 3.2 GHz. If you have a Mac Pro or an Apple Xserve server, feel free to try the ZDNet program. Just remember that you do it at your own risk. Don't blame me if something is going wrong during the process. Link to the download page of ZDNet Clock can be found here.

Blu-ray burner to Mac Pro and Power Mac

MCE Technologies has released a Blu-ray recorder that works to the Mac Pro and Power Mac. The recorder is able to burn on 25GB discs at a speed of 6X and 50GB dual-layer discs at a speed of 4X. The recorder is compatible with DVD+R/+RW Dual/Double Layer, DVD-RAM, and CD-R and CD-RW, but also capable of reading the HD DVD-ROM and burn LightScribe discs. The recorder sales in different versions and what distinguishes is the software that comes with the package. It is possible to get the recorder, but with software for $499, or with burning software Toast Titanium 9 + Toast BD/HD Plug-in for $599, or for those who have got a lot of money, with Adobe Premier Pro CS3 for $1295.00. It should, however, be clear that it takes her little time to burn a Blu-ray disc of 50GB at the speed of 4X. It the only disadvantage (in addition to the price then) that it takes a that long time to burn that much information in such a low speed. To learn more about MCE Technologies' new burner read here.

Adobe Flash + Google + Yahoo = true!

Adobe Flash gives designers a good chance to design web pages that are both stylish and functional. Adobe Flash has also created a great deal of concern among many designers because websites built with the help of Flash were not indexed by search engines like Google and Yahoo. In this sense, the visitors found it difficult to find web pages, which of course is a clear disadvantage, Adobe announced in a press release that Adobe opens up its Adobe Flash Technology for Google and Yahoo. Google has already begun to index web sites using the new technology. Information previously been hidden for Google's crawlers is now possible for the search engine to index.Google further on will deliver search results with interesting hits even on web pages that contain Adobe Flash. Adobe Flash is installed on millions of computers and is expected to be installed on more than 98% of all internet connected computers. Read more about Adobe's involvement with Google and Yahoo in Adobe's press release which can be found here.

Windows XP is dead, long live Windows XP!

Microsoft stopped the sales of Windows XP, 30 June 2008, but that does not mean it's impossible to get hold of a copy of the operating system. Personally, I am certainly not fond of Microsoft's new OS: Windows Vista. Ok, there are some new features and the interface looks quite attractive, transparent window frames and all. Even if security has been allocated an update, I am most disturbed at all warning messages popping up. Anyway, I like Windows XP. The operating sustem works on everything from lazy old computers to new modern game machines. Do you buy a printer or a USB device of any kind, you can count on XP. Even legacy applications, or older versions of new applications will work without problem if you are using Windows XP. In Vista, it is sometimes difficult to plug in a printer or install a program, even if compatibility getting better and better with time, of course. There are a variety of reasons to stick with Microsoft's old system Windows XP Home Edition or Windows XP Professional Edition.

For those who really want to, there are a number of opportunities to put your hands on a brand fresh copy of XP also in the future. The first reason is that some computer stores, mostly smaller companies that build their computers themselves, will continue to be allowed to sell computers with Windows XP as an pre-installed operating system, at least until the end of January 2009. Until the end of January 2009 Dell and Hawlett-Packard will also offer a so-called downgrading of Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate on some computer models. That means in simple terms, that you can buy a Dell or HP computer, and then downgrade the computer's OS for a good old-fashioned Windows XP. Another reason that you will manage to get a copy of Windows XP is that Microsoft's ceased sales does not mean that the operating system is not available in computer stores' stock. The XP will therefore continue to be sold until the computer stores are out of stock. Some firms even have bought extra copies of XP to be able to offer customers the rare operating system. Some enterprising people will no doubt also try to sell Windows XP orginal CDs through sites like eBay and Amazon. One have to be aware, otherwise it's likely to be fooled by fraudsters who steal your money or send pirated software instead of genuine ones. Just pirated versions of XP perhaps will be the most common form of distribution of Windows XP as time goes on. The operating system will surely be avalible through various illegal Peer2Peer filesharing networks. One should of course be clear that these are illegal copies, and that Microsoft does not give any guarantees that the operating system is secure and free from any malware. This does not mean that an illegal version must be bad. On the contrary, there are examples of pirated versions of XP, which will do just as good as the original, if not better. One example is TinyXP, which contains a large package of updated drivers and Service Pack 3 (SP3), which normally takes almost as long to download and install as the operating system itself. In TinyXP, the SP3 comes with the installation, which is not the case with a year old orginal copy of XP. Read more about TinyXP at APC Mag. A lot of computer customers will run into XP when they buy a new mini computer. Microsoft's new Windows Vista operating system is simply too heavy and costly to operate on a less powerful computer and Microsoft doesn't want to risk losing market share so, Microsoft will continue to sell XP as an pre-installed OS on minicomputers like ASUS Eee PC, Intel Classmates PC and so on. For those who are thinking of buying Windows XP, and for those who are already using the operating system, it might be good to know that Microsoft will support the system with updates until the end of 2009 and also provide necessary updates until as long as 2014.

How to hide a file (or folder) in Windows Explorer

It is possible to hide files and folders in Windows so that they aren't visible in Windows Explorer, even if the option show hidden files and folders are selected. This is an easy way to hide files via the program command window. The procedure is as I said quite simple, start by clicking the Windows Start button on the Windows panel and then select the option Run. In the box that turns up, type the letters "cmd", but without (") in front and after cmd, of course. This will open the command window. Once in command window, look for the folder containing the file you want to hide, such as "C:/Folder". You open the folder by typing "cd C:/Folder", where the CD stands for change directory. An old honest way to navigate through the old DOS filesystem. Again, leave out ("), and write only what is between the characters ("). Once you are at the correct folder, type "attrib filename +s +h", but with the file's name instead of filename. If everything is working correctly, then the file is now hidden in Windows Explorer. It doesn't matter whether Windows is set to show hidden files or not. If you want to get the file visible again, simply redo all the steps above, but type "attrib filename -s -h" instead of +s and +h. Just as before, it is necessary to replace the filename with the file's real name. If you want to know how to hide a entire folder from appearing in Windows Explorer, then you can read about it on this page: ss64.com.

The death of Microsoft's Windows XP

On 30 June 2008 Microsoft ended Windows XP. Protests and petitions have not helped, today an era of operating systems development came to it's end. Windows XP Home Edition and Professional Edition was made available to the public on 31 december 2001. Today, just over six and a half years later Microsoft ceased sales of Windows XP. Many people have thoughts about Windows XP, but an operating system that is running for over six years, it is certainly not so bad. Certainly, Microsoft has almost a monopoly on the market, but still XP has done a very great job. I think it is rather a pity that Microsoft now stop selling Windows XP, because I certainly isn't fond of Microsoft's new operating system Windows Vista. I don't think that an operating system will simply need to have 1GB of RAM just to start. File copying is also sometimes so slow that I almost fall asleep copying files on my Vista computer. No, I prefer small, light and fast operating system (read Ubuntu), which works equally well on an old computers as on a new modern machine. Some people, however, will stil manage to get a copy of Windows XP in the future, even on new computers. Microsoft will in fact also continue to sell Windows XP as an pre-installed operating systems on minicomputers such as ASUS Eee PC, PC Classmates etc. It will also be possible to downgrade Vista Ultimate and Vista Business to Windows XP. Some computer stores will also have Windows XP as pre-installed OS on computers in unsold stock. At the same time, a rumour told by several bloggers, say that Microsoft's next operating system, Windows 7, will be released in January 2010. It may only be rumours, but if it is true, it is almost an great idea to invest in Windows XP before it is too late, and then Windows 7, when the time comes. This may be a solution to completely avoid Vista.

Create a free website in 2 minutes

The site WIX.com makes it easy to create a website. The site offers a simple interface that almost anyone can use to build a simple but nice looking website. You don't need to have any knowledge of html or CSS to build a simple, yet good-looking homepage. When you think you have finished constructing the site, then you can upload the page to WIXs server or download the code of the site and put it somewhere else on the Internet. I think there are a lot of pretty great-looking templates at WIX.com. Check out WIX.coms video on YouTube to preview some of the features of the site. WIX.com should also optimize sites for better ranking in search engines, such as Google. I can't tell if it works or not, but it may be worth mentioning. I think the site is well worth a visit anyway, because the site itself is rather good-looking. You'll find the site at WIX.com.

Humyo offers 30GB of free online storage

The website Humyo offers 30GB of free online storage. 25GB of all uploaded files must be media files such as film, music, photographs, etc. Only 5GB may be documents of various kinds. But in all honesty, which normal user store more than 5GB documents on a website? In any case, I think 30GB is very generous space, especially compared with other sites offering only a few GB of free online storage. Humyo store all the files by using the information in the metadata of the files. This means that the site would store the files in a very easy way, grouping files automatically by category, ie music files sorted by album, artist, genre, etc. It is also possible to install a virtual hard drive on your computer, which makes it even easier to access the files on your Humyo account. Of course, you can also pay for extra storage. Read more at Humyos website.

YouTube: Tibetan revolt in Lhasa

The video site YouTube came to light in the middle of February 2005. Today YouTube is one of the world's most visited sites. Nowdays YouTube is almost a news channel bringing video clips from all over the world. For example there are several clips showing the Iraq war. YouTube plays an important role when it comes to countries with lack of democracy. YouTube may even be the only place where people have the opportunity to speak out. We noticed this recently when Tibetan citizen revolted against the Chinese rule in Tibet.

The Pirate Bay sued for 1.621.045 Euro by IFPI

The International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) demands the owners of The Pirate Bay to forfeit 1.621.045 Euro for violation of Swedish copyright laws. In addition to IFPI's claim the District Prosecutor Håkan Rooswall sued The Pirate Bay for 1,2 millions sek (around 200.000 dollar). The Swedish Antipiratbyrån (Antipiracy Agency) and the MPA (not the MPAA) are expected to require indemnity from the men behind the torrent site The Pirate Bay. I recently wrote a post concerning the Japanese ISP ban of pirates. Yesterday I wrote a post about the end of TorrentSpy.

Adobe Photoshop Express online photo editor

You have probably already noticed it, but I will mention it anyway. Adobe last Thursday launched a new online photo editing service called Photoshop Express. Photoshop Express is not intended to be a professional image editing software like the famous desktop version. The Express version will be used for minor photo editing. It will also serve well as a service for sharing and showing digital photos. You will find Adobe Photoshop Express (beta) here.

YouTube statistics tool for your site

YouTube recently added a new tool that could be used to collect video clip statistic. The new tool will give users the opportunity to find out which video is the most popular and on what day visitors watched a specific video clip. Users may also have information about visitors geographical location. It will be possible to find out even how the visitors reached the site hosting the video clip. I think this tool will be very useful for site owners who want to suit their site to the visitors behavior. Read YouTube's blog post for further information on YouTube's new tool.

"Finally, we have some answers. Today we're releasing YouTube Insight, a free tool that enables anyone with a YouTube account to view detailed statistics about the videos that they upload to the site. For example, uploaders can see how often their videos are viewed in different geographic regions, as well as how popular they are relative to all videos in that market over a given period of time."

Things are happening at YouTube. Two weeks ago the video site launched a new application programming interface, API. Even more recently YouTube showed how to get high quality on video clips.

iTunes and QuickTime update installs Safari for Windows

If you are using either Apple's iTunes or QuickTime then you will risk to auto-download Apple's new web browser Safari 3.1 for Windows. QuickTime and iTunes are using an auto-update tool to automatically download new software updates. This time the update tool will try to install the Safari browser along with the other updates. Users of the two programs therefore risk to install unwanted software at the moment they update iTunes and QuickTime. Mozilla CEO John Lilly complain that Apple's strategy borders on malware distribution habits. He also says that the behavior may effect people in the way that some won't trust auto-updates furthermore. Lilly said something important here, because it's very important to maintain the relationship between software users and the software companies. In any event, users should be aware of pre-checked options before installing new softwares and updates.

Fantasy Art 3D Wallpaper

There are a lot of sites where the visitors are able to download wallpapers to use as desktop backgrounds. I have a favorite site that has got a bunch of wonderful wallpapers. The site, Fantasy Art 3D Wallpaper, has got different themes as fantasy, sci-fi, nature a lot more. Most of the wallpapers are computer animated but the animations are so realistic that you almost cannot differentiate them from real photos. There is also a section which provides animated desktop applications. I don't want to have pointers, balls and other things moving around on my desktop, but some of the animations are actually really cool. Visit Fantasy Art 3D if you want to change the desktop background of you computer.

The Iraq war on YouTube

This week it is the 5th anniversary since the outbreak of the Iraq war. When the war began the video site YouTube didn't even exist. Today almost everybody are familiar with the site. There are many video clips that give us a picture of the war. You can for example watch the American first bomb raid against Baghdad. There is also a video clip that shows American soldiers on patrol in Baghdad. Another video clip shows still pictures of the war. A lot of people are negative to the Iraq war. Therefore you also can find antiwar clips on YouTube. USA use YouTube to spread war propaganda. The forces do have a channel at YouTube where the American forces publish their own video clips. A sad clip on YouTube describes the last letter of a soldier to his wife in US. The letter is performed as an opera song. One video clip has been shown about two million times. It is a video clip showing American soldiers during a street fight of Haifa.

Free Online Virus Scan with F-Secure, Panda Security and Trend Micro

Do you want to scan your computer for viruses? Then you may have to install an anti-virus program on your harddrive. I will suggest my visitors to use either AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition or avast! Home Edition. Avast do have some more functionalities than AVG, but I prefer the light-weight AVG anyway. If you don't want to install an anti-virus on your computer, then there are at least two free anti-virus online scanners. Both of these scanners are able to run in your browser, especially Internet Explorer. I don't really know if they also will work on Mozilla Firefox, maybe you have to use a plugin like IE Tab to get it run in Firefox. Well, visit F-Secure's homepage to run their online scanner. You will find the scanner at F-Secure Online Virus Scan. The second scanner is available at Trend Micro's homepage at the address Trend Micro HouseCall. As a last tip for today I will give you a link to Panda Security's homepage. Panda's scanner won't delete any threats but it will scan your computer for malware. Panda's online scan will be available at Panda ActiveScan with TruPrevent. I suggest that you run F-Secure Online Virus Scan and Trend Micro Housecall before you run Panda ActiveScan with TruePrevent because of Panda's restricted funcionality.

Japanese Internet providers block popular torrent site

TechCrunch published an article about Japanese ISPs upcoming block of a popular torrent site. Japanese Internet providers will probably block Internet users in Japan from using the filesharing site before both the United Kingdom and France take similar action. This got me thinking about the court case initiated by the Danish anti-piracy organization IFPI, which ruled that the Danish Internet provider DMT2 had to stop Danish Internet users from connecting to the torrent site named The Pirate Bay. The decision was an outcome of the former block of the Russian site ALLOFMP3. In the Danish case the spokesman of The Pirate Bay said that the decision prevented Danish people from downloading even legal material. The IFPI spokesman on the other hand defended the outcome of the Danish court by saying that almost all material on TPB is illegal and that the outcome of the Danish case will show the world that this kind of filesharing are undesirable. Time must show whether more countries will follow the Danish and Japanese example or if the pirates will find a way to avoid the action most recently taken by the Japanese ISPs.

The basics of Google search

Do you know how to use Google search in an efficient way? I will give you some advice concerning Google's search options. You probably already know several of my hints, but maybe there is still something for you to catch up on. The simplest way to limit the number of search results is to add more words into the text input field and then click the search button once again. One thing that I was unfamiliar with was that you can exclude a word by using a minus sign in front of a specific word. When using this method it is very important to have a blank space before the minus sign. If you are going to search for a phrase or quote then you shall use quotation marks before and after the phrase. Another useful tip is to limit the search to only one site. To achieve this you have to write the word site, followed by a colon and the domain name. For instance, if you are going to search for Britney Spears at perezhilton.com, then you must write Britney Spears site:perezhilton.com. What is open source code?

You may have heard of open source, but what does it mean in computer programming? Open source is programming code that is available to everyone. You can read the open source code and also use it in your own applications. There are a couple of conditions needed to be imposed by any program written in open source code. The Open Source Definition states that open source code has to be freely redistributed. One shall also be able to read the real code. Not only the original code has to be free, even derived code shall be redistributed for free. You shall also respect the author of the original code and not exclude his or her name from further distributions. Neither private persons or companies can be stopped from using the code. If a program based on open source code is a part of another program, then the whole program has to be distributed according to open source. The open source license doesn't say that all programs included in an open source distribution has to be free. These conditions are written by Bruce Perens and Eric Raymond. The conditions constitute The Open Source Definition. There are several popular program made of open source code. Mozilla Firefox, Apache, Linux operating system are all made of open source code.

Speed up your slow Windows Vista operating system

Many computer enthusiasts have experienced the slowness of Microsofts new operating system Windows Vista. To begin with, you shall not install Windows Vista on a computer with less than 2GB of random access memory (RAM). Otherwise your computer will not run at a comfortable speed, despite of what Microsofts specifications says. I installed Microsoft OS Windows Vista on one of my quite old PCs, a Pentium 4 1.50GHz, and it ran very slow. Windows XP however ran very smooth and easy on my old computer machine. There are however ways to speed up Windows Vista. You can use Microsofts new system called ReadBoost, the cleansing program Ccleaner, the Vista disk defragmenter tool or for experienced users even the program vLite, written by Dino Nuhagic.

Solid State Drives (SSD) between 80GB and 160GB

Intel Corporation will release Solid State Drives (SSD) with a capacity between 80GB to 160GB during 2008. Intel will provide both 1.8" and 2.5" drives. SSD deliver faster boot times, embedded code storage, rapid data access and low-power storage alternatives for laptops and notebooks. Intel's new drives will by the date of release probably have the largest storage capacity ever seen on SSD. SSD are still expensive to develop and manufacture so the market share for these neat drives won't be large in 2008.
